Partner profiles

David Hodgson

David joined the Practice as far back as 1965 as a then articled clerk to Tom Read, (one of the individuals from whom the firm takes its name). Qualified in 1970 David joined Tom Read as a partner becoming one of the youngest partners in the country at that time.

Following a 10 year partnership with Tom Read, until Tom’s death, David then developed the business through acquiring a further 2 smaller practices and embracing IT at an early stage to bring efficiencies to working practices within the office for the client benefits.

As a non-exec director of a regional building society for 25 years he was one of the first non-executive directors to qualify as a Chartered Banker in 1990. The banking knowledge and experience provides a useful tool in the practice environment.

Within the practice, David’s role is now that of managing partner and supervision of the taxation function.

Outside of normal office activities, David involves himself with roles within various voluntary organisations, including governor of TyneMet College, trustee of North Tyneside YMCA, chair of Patterdale Hall Estate Ltd, panel member of North Tyneside Business Forum, exec member of North Shields Chamber of Trade & Commerce and secretary/treasurer of another 10 community based organisations. Recent additional roles have seen him take on Charity Challenges in South Africa, Malaysia and, in April 2012, Peru.

Nick Liley

Nick joined Read, Milburn & Co. in 1997 having trained and qualified in his home town of Sheffield.

Moving to the North East in 1990, Nick added to his post qualification experience by developing the role of audit manager for another leading North East independent before deciding to move to the coast.

Initially taking on the role of audit manager, Nick became a partner in 2005 and remains responsible for all areas of corporate compliance, including audit, charity and solicitors accounts.

He has extensive experience in dealing with SME’s and now specialises in all aspects of charity and voluntary sector work, as well as devoting time to business start ups.

Formerly a keen rugby player, Nick now keeps fit walking in The Lake District and Northumberland.
